Austin Highlights

Atisa was pleased to be a sponsor of the SIOR Spring Conference in Austin.  Not only did we make a lot of new friends, but we learned a lot from the featured speakers.

Parag Khana spoke on Mega-Trends: Technology, Cities, and the Map of the Future.  One of the key ideas that really stuck with us is that economies are no longer bound by geography.  For example, we here at Atisa are part of a very large cross-border economy that extends all the way up to Los Angeles.  We picked up his book “Connectography” and highly recommend it for further reading.

Michael Litt was a real treat for us to listen to.  His first-person view of The Big Short was fascinating.  He also gave some good nuggets of advice:

  • Personal relationships are the key to growth.
  • Read “Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea” (we already ordered a copy!).
  • Only use forms of leverage when they are hard to get.  When everyone is offering them, run the other way.
  • If you own an index fund, you own the largest portion of overvalued stocks and the smallest share of potential growth stocks.
  • Forsees a situation of 2-5 years of low to zero returns, nationally.

Mark Dotzour, Ph.D. was an audience favorite.  He had us all hooting and hollering with his dry witticisms on the economy and politics.  (Yes, if you missed it, he was an entertaining economist!) His talk focused on market cycles.  Transaction volume is a key indicator of economic change. If the volume of transactions in an industry is low, making prices hard to determine, you’re either about to hit a recession or a boom.  He listed 3 factors to watch that could cause economic problems:

  • Oil prices skyrocket and stick
  • Full employment leads to wage inflation
  • Congress passes huge infrastructure bills with no way to pay it

We’re excited to see everyone at the SIOR Fall World Conference in Denver!
