{"id":1183,"date":"2018-05-12T00:47:33","date_gmt":"2018-05-12T00:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atisa.com\/blog\/?p=1183"},"modified":"2018-05-17T00:33:15","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T00:33:15","slug":"austin-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atisa.com\/blog\/austin-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atisa was pleased to be a sponsor of the SIOR Spring Conference in Austin. \u00a0Not only did we make a lot of new friends, but we learned a lot from the featured speakers. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parag Khana spoke on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega-Trends: Technology, Cities, and the Map of the Future. \u00a0One of the key ideas that really stuck with us is that economies are no longer bound by geography. \u00a0For example, we here at Atisa are part of a very large cross-border economy that extends all the way up to Los Angeles. \u00a0We picked up his book \u201cConnectography\u201d and highly recommend it for further reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Litt was a real treat for us to listen to. \u00a0His first-person view of The Big Short was fascinating. \u00a0He also gave some good nuggets of advice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal relationships are the key to growth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read \u201cShip of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea\u201d (we already ordered a copy!).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only use forms of leverage when they are hard to get. \u00a0When everyone is offering them, run the other way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you own an index fund, you own the largest portion of overvalued stocks and the smallest share of potential growth stocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forsees a situation of 2-5 years of low to zero returns, nationally.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Dotzour, Ph.D. was an audience favorite. \u00a0He had us all hooting and hollering with his dry witticisms on the economy and politics. \u00a0(Yes, if you missed it, he was an entertaining economist!) His talk focused on market cycles. \u00a0Transaction volume is a key indicator of economic change.
