{"id":1418,"date":"2019-06-24T21:14:51","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T21:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atisa.com\/blog\/?p=1418"},"modified":"2022-02-10T19:23:29","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T19:23:29","slug":"border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atisa.com\/blog\/border\/","title":{"rendered":"Border Topics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Western Maquiladora Trade Association Meeting<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, June 19, we attended the monthly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wmtaonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Maquiladora Trade Association <\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meeting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stayed updated on the latest border issues<\/span>. Here<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some key points to take into consideration:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mixed direct labor costs increased in the Tijuana manufacturing sector in Q1<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up from $2.76 to $3.06 due to a doubling of the minimum wage and a large market-driven increase on skilled assembler wages. \u00a0The higher salaries are leading to lower than usual turnover, currently averaging around 5% a month. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The industrial sector is experiencing historical employment<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 237,000 total workers in the Tijuana Maquiladora sector. \u00a0This is the most ever since the Maquiladora program was started in the 1960s.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>NAFTA 2.0 (the USMCA) is currently on hold in the United States Congress<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Democrats are voicing concerns raised by the AFL-CIO that there aren&#8217;t enough protections for auto workers. They are seeking a side-agreement outside of the main trade agreement, which cannot be altered. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-mexico-usmca\/mexico-first-to-ratify-usmca-trade-deal-trump-presses-us-congress-to-do-same-idUSKCN1TK2U3\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico and Canada are ready to ratify the agreement<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The annualized inflation in Mexico is relatively low this year<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anterior.banxico.org.mx\/portal-inflacion\/inflation.html\" target=\"_blank\">averaging 4.28%<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0In comparison, inflation is slightly higher in Tijuana at 6%. This provides a great opportunity to lock in forward contracts.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bank rates are also holding steady, with the internal bank exchange rate hovering at 8%<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With the U.S. Federal Funds Rate at 2.25%, there is a great opportunity for investors looking south of the border. Mexico\u2019s economy continues to grow, although that growth is showing signs of slowing, especially in new hires.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atisa.com\/blog\/trumps-mexico-tariffs-dilemma\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent threat of blanket tariffs on Mexico by President Trump<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, information has come out regarding how serious the threat really was. According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, no instructions were ever handed down indicating a pending change to the tariffs. When rates change, the agency has to reprogram all their computer systems with the new instructions, and even the weekend before the proposed rates were to go into effect they had received no orders. While it is impossible to get into President Trump\u2019s head, it was likely a scare tactic in reaction to news footage aired that morning on Fox News of a large 1000 person migrant group crossing the border in Texas to seek asylum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Regardless of intent, the threat had ramifications on businesses doing business across the border, as the average company in Tijuana faced the possibility of a half million dollars in additional monthly tariffs.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturers in Tijuana and San Diego remain positive when it comes to the future of the countries&#8217; relationship.
